Rice urges England to improve after Malta’s defeat

Declan Rice hopes England can improve upon their lukewarm 2-0 win over Malta on Friday when they play North Macedonia in the evening on Monday.

Three Lions will face the same opposition that they beat 7-0 when playing in reverse in June.

Their midfielder wants to replicate that performance at Skopje.

He stated: “I believe that especially after Malta the other evening, there was just a little bit of pride within ourselves. We need to lift our game.

We need to make a public statement. It would be an excellent way to finish the year.

We are unbeaten in the World Cup and it’s up to us tomorrow to put on an impressive performance.

You need to mentally prepare yourself and get ready for an hostile environment. We want this year to end with a bang.

We will be prepared for anything they may throw our way.

Arsenal’s ace, who thought he was on the scoresheet on Friday at Wembley after a good run and a shot that found the corner — but it was ruled out due to offside.

He revealed the close call has motivated him to go out and find his hunting boots Monday.

He replied: “I was gutted the last time I saw you.

When I drove the ball through the corner and bent it into the far right, I was ecstatic because I score goals that rarely.

When it was cleared, I was devastated. But it was one where I did not want to have a fight with the referee and receive a stupid yellow card.

Maybe tomorrow I will be able to score another one.
