Real Madrid President reveals that the European Super League has become more necessary than ever

  • Real Madrid and Barcelona remain the two clubs that are championing this new Super League
  • After protests and criticisms from all over Europe, the other founding clubs withdrew.
  • Florentino Perez shares why he believes a new tournament should be created

Florentino Pérez, president of Real Madrid, launched a stinging criticism at UEFA for the new Champions League format. He also reiterated his call for a European Super League.

In 2021, when the 12 founding clubs first announced their participation in the competition for the entire continent, there was an immediate reaction from the fans all over the globe. Only Madrid and Barcelona are the only survivors.

Juventus finally confirmed their plans to withdraw in June earlier this year.

On December 21, the European Court of Justice is expected to make its final decision on the European Super League and determine whether or not UEFA, FIFA and the other clubs were lawful in their actions of blocking the creation of the competition and seeking sanctions against the clubs.

Perez, speaking at Madrid’s annual general assembly, reiterated that a new competition was needed to revitalize European football.

He stated: “The situation has become very grave. We must act now, or the game will die.”

The main issue is the fact that managers are acting without considering the fans. European football doesn’t belong to the presidents of UEFA or La Liga.

The Super League has never been more important. Its goal is to provide the best possible football, and the clubs are the ones who have to decide their fate.

There are many clubs who lose millions of dollars every year, no matter what their owner’s wealth is. Financial Fair Play is a rule that some clubs do not follow, and there are no consequences. The situation cannot remain stable.

The new UEFA project is absurd and unusual. This new model will alienate even more fans, especially our youngest.

In 2024/25 36 teams are expected to participate in the Champions League on a single comprehensive table. Top eight teams will go directly into the final 16, while the remaining positions are put into play-offs for a place in this stage.

Perez spoke of the importance of catering to younger football fans. He promised that the European Super League would provide a lower-cost product to be watched.

He said: “We are obliged to give the fans the best show possible. Also, we want to reduce the cost of accessing televised soccer. There is no reason to be forced to pay 10 percent of your minimum wage in order to watch football. Super League was created to fix all of these issues. “I continue to believe in the justice and fairness of the European Union, because UEFA has no right to monopolize football in Europe of Freedoms.
