Joe Burrow QB Cincinnati Bengals is out for the rest of the year after injuring a ligament on his right hand during the 34-20 defeat to the Baltimore Ravens.
Zac Taylor, the Bengals head coach on Friday said that Burrow would likely need surgery. The QB was “very disappointed” by the outcome.
Burrow was forced to leave the game in the second half of Thursday’s match, just after he threw a touchdown pass that gave the Bengals a 10-7 lead. Burrow could be seen writhing in pain when he released his ball.
Burrow then was seen trying to throw the football on the sidelines of his team. Burrow was clearly upset when he couldn’t grip the football and then shook his heads in frustration, before running to the team locker room.
Burrow told the NFL that he felt “a pop” in the middle the throw on the play prior to it. Burrow said, “I tried to do it but couldn’t pull it off. And obviously, I got the news this morning, which is not good.”
Taylor stated that the quarterback likely injured himself when Ravens linebacker Jadeveve Clowney fell on Burrow during an earlier play in the scoring drive.
Burrow suffered serious injuries after being chosen first in the NFL Draft 2020 out of Louisiana State University. Burrow’s first season in the NFL was interrupted when he ruptured his MCL and ACL on his left leg.
Taylor was asked to comment on the mental and physical impact of Burrow’s injuries.
I think you would be worried if it was someone else. He’s not. Taylor told the audience on Friday that “He is programmed and wired in a different way.”
He is built differently to be able overcome challenges.
It’s because of this that I have confidence in his ability to respond the correct way and at the appropriate time. Joe is built that way.
Burrow was spotted wearing some type of brace on his wrist on Wednesday, but he wasn’t listed as injured on the Bengals list for Thursday’s match. He told the NFL that both injuries are unrelated on Friday.
The NFL released a Friday statement in which it said that they were investigating whether or not the Bengals had complied with its injury reporting policy. In situations such as this, the league stated that an investigation was “routine”.
Burrow became the highest paid player in NFL’s history after he led his team to 2022 Super Bowl, and won the AFC championship game last year. Burrow, a native of Ohio, signed a contract extension worth $275 million over five years with Cincinnati until the season 2029.
After finishing Thursday’s match, Bengals backup quarterback Jake Browning will take over.
Cincinnati will play the Pittsburgh Steelers, a division rival team on November 26, in its next match.
