Ivan Toney demands release clause during talks on new Brentford contract

  • Arsenal & Chelsea both had talks with Toney’s representatives about a possible transfer
  • Brentford’s price-demand of more than PS80m is likely to prevent January departure
  • Striker’s contract with Brentford extends until 2025

Ivan Toney, who continues to press for his departure from Brentford, will insist on a release condition in the contract negotiations with Brentford. 90min has learned.

Toney is eager to depart Brentford in January. Both Arsenal and Chelsea have held discussions with Toney’s representative.

Brentford is prepared to ask for more than PS80m in order to sell Toney this January. This figure has shocked Toney.

Toney’s high price tag is unlikely to prevent a transfer in the winter. He will be 28 years old by March. The Bees striker is now considering other options for his future.

Toney could sign a contract extension with Brentford that includes a clause for Toney to leave the club. Toney is willing to extend his contract but sees his long-term future elsewhere and would demand an exit clause that allows him to leave.

A mutually beneficial extension could be reached by Brentford and Toney. Brentford would preserve Toney’s value, as he would not enter the last 12 months of the existing contract, while Toney would benefit from a release clause that would facilitate a transfer in the future.

Brentford is willing to give Toney a contract extension in order to retain their top striker. However, it will all depend on whether they are willing to include a clause for Toney’s release and how much they value him.

Toney still wants to leave in January, but is worried that his price could deter suitors. Chelsea and Arsenal are both known to have other targets.

Both Chelsea and Arsenal have scouted Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez, while Chelsea is a huge fan of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. They are closely watching as the Nigerian international continues to negotiate his contract.

Toney is still suspended for competitive play due to his gambling violations. He cannot return before January 17th. If he remained with Brentford’s first team, Toney would have the opportunity to play Chelsea and Arsenal back-to-back in early March.
