Manchester City is interested in Chelsea’s full-back Ian Maatsen.
Maatsen, who spent a successful year on loan with Burnley in the summer of 2016, returned to Chelsea. However, Mauricio pochettino’s new Stamford Bridge manager has not been able to make him a regular.
Dutch youth international, Theo van der Hoeven has played just 107 Premier League minutes during 2023/24 and yet to start a league match for Blues.
Chelsea agreed to a sale of £31m for the full-back. Maatsen, however, rejected the opportunity to reunite with Vincent Kompany again at Turf Moor.
Chelsea has been trying to sign the player to a contract since then to prevent him from becoming a free-agent when his deal ends in 2024. 90min reported recently that Chelsea had activated a clause in order to extend 21-year old’s contract for 12 months, to 2025.
Chelsea is still keen on tying Maatsen to a long-term contract despite activating the clause. If a contract cannot be agreed by the end of January, Chelsea will consider selling the full-back.
Maatsen admitted to Ad that he wants to be able to explore all options.
He said, “I think that it is still possible for me to play at Chelsea more.” Accepting that you won’t be playing is hard, because as a boy, you want to play more. The manager’s confidence instils me with the ability to be ready for the moment the chance arises.
“I have to be open-minded and keep my options wide.” Chelsea may also inform me if I have to take a tough decision in the future.
Sources have confirmed to 90min, that Manchester City is one of several clubs who are monitoring Maatsen’s situation at Stamford Bridge. The Premier League champions are interested in signing a left-back who is a natural. A cheap deal for Maatsen would be appealing to them.
