Southampton 2-1 West Brom : Armstrong’s strike secures Saints victory

Adam Armstrong’s 79th minute winner secured a 2-1 win for Southampton over West Brom.

Will Smallbone put Saints in the lead early before Kyle Bartley equalized. West Brom nearly led when Darlong’s crossbar hit.

Armstrong slid in his ninth of the year to give Saints a league high eight goals in their last 15 minutes.

The win extended Southampton’s unbeaten streak to eight games, while West Brom’s winning streak of three matches was ended.

Saints score first, as they did in all seven of their previous games.

In the fifth minute, Stuart Armstrong cut Adam Armstrong back from the line. The shot was blocked, but Smallbone took the rebound to score from close quarters.

Conor Townsend believed he cleared the ball off the line, but goal-line technologies confirmed West Brom conceded their first match goal since September.

Alex Palmer was not tested again until the 28th minutes by the hosts.

Smallbone was passed to by Smallbone via Kamaldeen Sulmana. However, his shot had too much height and it cleared the crossbar.

Baggies found their strength, made a strong press and knocked on the door for a goal in the final 10 minutes of first half.

Nathaniel Chalobah’s intent was clear, even if he slipped while recording the first shot of his team.

Taylor Harwood Bellis’s head-back to the ball stopped Brandon Thomas Asante from burying his shot in the corner.

Southampton was relieved when the whistle blew. Then, the Turkish midfielder Okay Yokuslu fired from the corner.

Mason Holgate replaced the suspended Jan Bednarek in the first eleven. Mason Holgate, a former West Brom Loanee who had some nervous moments during the first-half but settled into the match with an important block that denied Thomas Asante.

The Baggies continued to push without any end result. In the 63rd, Matt Phillips demonstrated his directness by jinxing off his left flank. His curling shot then bounced wide.

It was not surprising that two minutes later, the home side equalized.

Thomas-Asante headed in Jed Wallace’s cross. Bartley then followed up with a thumping header to score his second of the season.

Darnell Furlong’s attack on Townsend’s cross saw it crash into the crossbar.

Saints scored with just 11 minutes remaining.

Adam Armstrong calmly slid Ryan Fraser’s pass down to the backpost and tucked in his ninth goal for the season. Saints only had one shot at goal in the second half.

Gavin Bazunu made a spectacular stoppage time save in order to keep the three points and deny Jayson Moumby.
