Newcastle’s predicted line-up vs Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League

  • Newcastle United travels to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday
  • Magpies searching for first Champions League win away since February 2003
  • The Group F team, including Milan and PSG is in a delicate position

Newcastle United will travel to Germany on Tuesday to play Borussia Dortmund in an attempt to win their first away match since 2003.

Eddie Howe’s team has benefited from the intense atmosphere at St James’ Park in this season, winning a historic home victory against Paris Saint-Germain while also delivering a strong performance even though they lost to Dortmund just a week ago.

Newcastle is now aiming to win their first away match in Europe’s top competition since the early 1990s. The Magpies won their only away victory in the Champions League on their last trip to Germany, when Shola Ameobi & Lomana LuaLua led the Magpies past Bayer Leverkusen.

Howe could use this XI to help Newcastle progress from the difficult Group F.

Nick Pope

Nick Pope, GK –Only Nick Pope and one other goalkeeper who has made more than one appearance this season in the Champions League competition can boast a higher Champions League saving percentage. Gregor Kobel, the Dortmund goalkeeper is the one who has to deal with Newcastle.

Tino Livramento Gabriel Martinelli was not given any space to breathe after he had been thrown into the fire of the Gunners win on Saturday.

Jamaal Lascelles, CB – It’s only November and Lascelles already has eight starts in this campaign. That is more than the five he had during the entire previous season.

Fabian Schar: The Swiss CB has scored one goal more than the whole Dortmund team this season combined.

Kieran Trippier, LB – Trippier could be forced to play on his non-natural side if Matt Targett or Dan Burn are injured. However, this would not affect his performances.

Sean Longstaff, CSS: John Farrage, the chairman of North Shields Juniors’ youth team, remembered an incident which highlighted Longstaff’s “must win” character. Farrage recalled that they had to get his father to calm him down one day. He came back and scored a winner!”

Bruno Guimaraes, CM – The only Champions League win Guimaraes ever had away from the home of his team was against Manchester City three years earlier in the quarterfinals.

Joe Willock, CM –Willock has already scored six Europa League goals and is still awaiting his Champions League debut.

RW Miguel AlmironA fixture in the team, despite Newcastle’s new wealth. Only Schar (81) has appeared more times under Howe (78) than Almiron.

Callum Wilson, ST:Without Alexander Isak as a replacement option, Wilson must [reserve the delicate fitness of Newcastle’s one natural centre forward.

Anthony Gordon, LW –Only 6 players have a sprinting speed faster than Gordon in the Champions League this year. Surprisingly, his teammate Sandro Tonati is one of those six.
