Six shirts that Lionel Messi wore during Argentina’s World Cup winning campaign will be auctioned.
Messi the 36-year-old captain lifted the trophy when his team defeated France in the final of last December in Qatar.
The set includes his shirt from the final, and is expected to sell for more than PS8m at the Sotheby’s auction in New York.
Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ jersey set the record price for an actual game worn football shirt. It sold in 2022 for PS7.1m
Brahm Wächter, Sotheby’s head of collectibles for modern items, described the auction of Messi’s six shirts as “a historic event in auction history”.
Messi is the only player to have scored in all four stages of the World Cup: the quarter-finals (quarter-finals), semi-finals (semi-finals), and the final.
Wachter said: “It’s an honor for Sotheby’s that they present these valuable collectibles, which capture the brilliance and excellence of a football player who redefined boundaries in the sport.
Messi shirts are on display at Sotheby’s New York headquarters during a public, free exhibition that is available between 30 November to 14 December.
