Gillingham 3-1 Salford – Gills win in Clemence Clemence first league home game

Stephen Clemence won his first league home game as manager of Gillingham with a convincing 3-1 win over Salford.

Connor Mahoney, a midfielder on loan from the home team, scored the first goal after 22 minutes with a left-footed curling shot.

Salford’s Matt Smith, who rose over Shad Ogie and headed past Jake Turner to score the goal in just 16 minutes.

Ammies’ Curtis Tilt nearly diverted Max Clark’s shot into his own goal two minutes before the half.

Clemence’s team retook the advantage in the 54th minutes when Tom Nichols headed home his first league goal this season from Jonny William’s cross.

Dom Jefferies headed past Alex Cairns, the Salford goalkeeper after receiving a looping Cheye Alexander assist.

Turner made a superb fingertip save, preventing Smith from netting his second goal of the match and giving the visiting team hope.

Ogie’s header off the crossbar in the dying seconds of the game prevented the Gills from scoring four league goals at home for the first since January 2021.
