Stephen Humphrys’ missed penalty in the second half held Wigan to a draw of 1-1 at Cheltenham.
Liam Sercombe’s penalty equalized the score for the hosts before the half.
Humphrys, who played for Wigan at the time, had a chance to take the title in the 64th-minute. However his poor spot kick was easily collected by Luke Southwood.
Freestone, after Humphrys’ good work in the first six minutes, turned Jordan Jones’ low cross into his net.
Martial Godo’s shot on the bar in the 12th-minute nearly made it 2-0, but Cheltenham rallied.
Curtis Davies’ shot was just off target and Curtis Thompson sent a rocket over the top.
Sercombe scored his second goal of the season in the 32nd minutes after Baba Adeeko tripped Will Goodwin in the box.
Goodwin, who had flicked on Davies’ free kick from Southwood after Davies’ flick, hit the post in the first half.
Wigan failed to score from the penalty spot, and Cheltenham earned a point. Davies forced Sam Tickle into a diving stop in the 71st-minute.
