Champions League matchday three predictions

  • This week, the third round of Champions League 2023/24 fixtures will take place.
  • Arsenal must travel to Sevilla while Manchester United is at Kobenhavn.
  • Newcastle hosts Borussia Dortmund and PSG takes on Milan on Wednesday

The 2023/24 Champions League Group Stages are approaching their halfway mark.

The teams would have played three of the six games in their group after Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s matches, but for some, desperation set in on matchday 2. After the last round of fixtures, the groupings should be starting to take shape.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City all need points to win their next matches. Manchester City is once again on a roll. Newcastle could win Group F if they beat Borussia Dortmund at home.

This is how 90min sees the Champions League matches this week.

The third matchday kicks off on Saturday, with Galatasaray welcoming group-stage phenoms Bayern Munich and the last season’s finalists Inter facing RB Salzburg in San Siro.

Bayern is currently on a 36 game unbeaten streak in Champions League Group Stage fixtures, and has won 15 consecutive matches. If they win in Istanbul, on Tuesday, Bayern will become the first team to have won eight consecutive away matches in group stage.

Inter, who beat Roger Schmidt’s team on Matchday Two and RB Salzburg on Matchday One, will look to deliver a similar controlled performance.

Manchester United needs to beat Kobenhavn in Old Trafford to stand a chance at progressing out of Group A. Arsenal can do with a win after their last match against Lens.

After a poor start, the Ligue 1 team’s form improved significantly before their break. Lens will host PSV in a group match on Tuesday. Peter Bosz and his team are hoping for their first victory of the stage after winning nine of nine games in the Eredivisie.

Real Madrid have won back-to-back matches to take control of the Group C. However, Braga is a difficult away match across Iberia. Napoli will face Union Berlin after losing to Madrid in an exciting back-and forth match on Matchday 2. Both of the debutants’ games have been a terrible loss.

Real Sociedad has been one of most impressive teams in the league so far, despite only having four points instead of 6. The next match for the Spanish is a trip away to Lisbon, where Benfica are desperate to kick-start their season.

Barcelona has not been able to captivate the public in recent times, with an ever-growing injury list. But results have always mattered and they have delivered them. The team will be looking to maintain their 100% record when they face Shakhtar Donetsk on one of the two early kickoffs scheduled for Wednesday.

Lazio has struggled to be relevant in Europe, since their return to the continent, but have made an impressive start to Group E. They face Feyenoord on De Kuip, which is a tough away match.

The Celtic Champions League campaign is a disaster so far. On Wednesday, Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid will be in town. The Spanish have worked hard to earn their points, yet they are top of group after two matches.

In the “Group of Death”, the best action will be witnessed once more with Newcastle taking on Borussia Düsseldorf. After a slow season start, the Bundesliga team has enjoyed a recent upsurge. But will they be able fight fire with flames against Premier League’s best attacking force before a fervent St. James’ crowd? They are facing a stacked deck.

In the other Group F match, modern behemoths PSG will host historic giants Milan at home in Paris. Milan have lost both of their games so far, and PSG needs to bounce back after losing on Tyneside.

Man City continues his waltz towards the top of Group G as RB Leipzig hosts Red Star BelgradeRoyal Antwerp will host Porto on Wednesday in Belgium.
